Home | Otaru Sightseeing Portal | Ebisu Shrine
Ebisu Shrine in Shukunai, Otaru, was founded in 1856 and is known for being revered by the three major fishing magnates of Shukunai.
Currently, the main hall housed within the covering structure is designated as a historical building (No. 58) by Otaru City. Located on a hill overlooking the Shukunai coast, its grounds offer beautiful views of the Otaru sea. The two votive ship paintings dedicated inside the worship hall are recognized as constituent cultural properties of the "Kitamaebune" Japan Heritage. Additionally, within the shrine grounds are sacred mulberry and Japanese yew trees, designated as preserved trees by Otaru City.

The enshrined deity is Yaekotoshiro-nushi-no-Okami, considered a child of Okuninushi-no-Kami and sometimes identified with Ebisu-sama. This deity is revered as the god of the sea, commerce, and oracle, and is said to grant blessings for "business prosperity, good fortune, warding off evil, recovery from illness, safety at sea, and safe travels."

Located in Shukunai, Otaru, a town that prospered through fishing, it is believed to be particularly effective for safety at sea as a god of the sea.

Q. How to get to Otaru?
From Sapporo, the most convenient way is the JR Hakodate Main Line; the Rapid Airport train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.
Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. Adding a glassblowing experience, the Music Box Museum, and dining would make a 1-night, 2-day trip more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi Street" with numerous renowned sushi restaurants. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.
Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be visited on foot?
Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is mild and ideal for walks, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo hot spring village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring destination in the mountains.
Q. Are there spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and older. Additionally, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukunai area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
Q. What day trip destinations are accessible from Otaru?
Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is a given, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour). These are popular day trip courses. Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
