HomeOtaru Sightseeing Portal | Kenashiyama Observatory

The Kenashiyama Observatory is a rest stop located along National Route 393, which connects Otaru City and Akaigawa Village, in the middle of Kenashi Pass. While Mt. Tengu, one of Hokkaido's three major night views, is famous as a night view spot in Otaru, the view from Kenashiyama Observatory is popular for its wide-ranging vista that is distinct from Mt. Tengu.

A wooden sign at Kenashiyama Observatory states its elevation as 470m

Although it is slightly lower than Mt. Tengu, at an elevation of 470m, many people travel from afar to visit this observatory, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of Otaru city and Ishikari Bay that is unique to this spot. After sunset, the surrounding area is enveloped in darkness, so on clear nights, you can see the stars beautifully. Please note that the parking lot is closed during winter.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with direct access from New Chitose Airport taking about 75 minutes.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. To include glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and dining, it's best to have a 1-night, 2-day trip for a more fulfilling experience.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflection on the water is a representative scene of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, kaisendon (seafood bowls), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has so many famous sushi restaurants that there's even an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated along Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can I walk to Otaru's tourist spots?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). The main spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling with mild weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and fresh seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

Otaru City has several hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What are some day trip destinations from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is a popular day trip, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, about 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base to explore the wider western Hokkaido area.
