You can access it from Sapporo Station by JR Hakodate Main Line rapid "Airport" or local train in about 30-40 minutes. From New Chitose Airport, it takes about 75 minutes by rapid "Airport" without transfer, making it possible to visit directly from the airport. Otaru Station is the starting point for Otaru sightseeing, and major tourist spots such as Sankaku Market, Otaru Canal, and Sakaimachi Street Shopping Arcade are all within walking distance.

Inside the station, there's a unique atmosphere with its famous "oil lamps," and the station building itself is a popular photo spot. The Former Temiya Line is a historic promenade utilizing the site of Hokkaido's first railway. This line, which transported coal and goods during the Meiji era, now preserves its tracks and cobblestones as they were, offering a spot where you can stroll and feel the history of Hokkaido's railway.

The promenade of the Former Temiya Line is located in the center of Otaru City, easily accessible from near the Otaru Canal. Walking along the canal towards Ironai, you can reach the entrance in about 6 minutes, and the promenade continues from Ironai to the Shinkomachi area. It is recommended to visit it together with the canal.

The railway tracks laid on the cobblestones remain as they are, making it a popular photo spot with a retro atmosphere. Otaru Sushi Street is a street lined with sushi restaurants in the center of Otaru City, a gourmet spot symbolizing "Otaru, the city of sushi." Many sushi restaurants, from long-established ones to popular ones, offering Otaru sushi made with fresh seafood such as sea urchin, salmon roe, scallops, and crab caught off the coast of Hokkaido, are gathered here, making it an area highly regarded by food connoisseurs.

Otaru Sushi Street is located in the Hanazono area, about a 9-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, making it easily accessible from the central part of Otaru sightseeing. Since it is also within walking distance from Sakaimachi Street Shopping Arcade and Otaru Canal, it is a convenient location to stop by for dinner or lunch to conclude your sightseeing.

Popular restaurants tend to be crowded day and night, so it's best to make a reservation in advance. Many restaurants offer relatively affordable set menus during lunchtime, allowing you to enjoy authentic Otaru sushi while keeping costs down. Trying an omakase course with seasonal ingredients is also highly recommended to savor the best seafood of the day.

Sakaimachi Street Shopping Arcade is the busiest shopping and gourmet area in Otaru City. It's home to Otaru's representative souvenir shops and sweets stores like Kitaichi Glass and LeTAO, with historical buildings from the Meiji and Taisho eras renovated into shops, making it a street where you can enjoy sightseeing and shopping at the same time.

It's located about a 10-15 minute walk from Otaru Canal, or an 8-minute walk from JR Minami-Otaru Station. Since it's within walking distance of the canal and the Former Temiya Line, it can be naturally incorporated into your Otaru sightseeing route. The street is about 1300 meters long, so a leisurely stroll is recommended.

You'll find a wide selection of Otaru's famous sweets, such as LeTAO's Double Fromage cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream. The Ironai Bank District is located just inland from the Otaru Canal and can be accessed in a few minutes on foot from along the canal. The Former Temiya Line promenade is also adjacent, so a course combining Otaru Canal → Former Temiya Line → Ironai Bank District on foot is efficient. It is also conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station.

Several buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties or Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of the country remain, such as the Former Hokkaido Bank Main Office and the Former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch. The Former Otaru Warehouse is a group of stone warehouses built in the Meiji era, historic buildings that once served as a trading hub through Otaru Port. The north wing is used as the "Otaru City Museum Canal Annex," where you can view exhibits on Otaru's history, nature, and industry. Inside the building, which retains the stone warehouses from the Meiji era, you can easily learn about Otaru's thriving period of trade through the port. The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It is also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to one day is a good estimate. If you add glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, two days and one night would make for a more fulfilling trip.

Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the scene reflected on the water is a representative view of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing even without a rental car.

Each season has its own unique charm. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and delicious seafood. Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans suitable for elementary school children and older. Also, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery - about 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer - about 1 hour). These are popular day trip courses. Otaru serves as a base to extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
