How to enjoy the Otaru Snow Light Path, skiing, and winter events unique to Otaru in winter (FAQ)

Q. What kind of event is "Otaru Snow Light Path"?

The "Otaru Snow Light Path" is Otaru's representative winter festival, held for about 10 days in February each year, and is a major event attracting approximately 500,000 people. It began in 1999, and its name is derived from the poetry collection "Yukiakari no Michi" (Snow Light Path) by Otaru-born poet Sei Ito. The main venues are the Otaru Canal and the former Temiya Line railway tracks. At the canal venue, a fantastical scenery unfolds with Otaru glass floating candles on the water, while at the Temiya Line venue, candles illuminate snow tunnels and objects. Over 100,000 candles are used during the event. It is a heartwarming winter tradition, with each candle lit one by one by volunteers from Japan and abroad.

Q. Are there any ski resorts in Otaru where I can enjoy skiing?

There are two ski resorts in Otaru. "Otaru Tenguyama Ski Resort" is located on Mt. Tengu, which is 532m above sea level, and can be accessed by ropeway to the summit. From the slopes, you can ski while looking down at Otaru city and Ishikari Bay, making it "a ski resort with a view of the sea" that has been loved by locals for many years, and is also used for ski lessons by elementary and junior high schools in Otaru. "Snow Cruise Onze" is located on Mt. Harukayama in Otaru City, and as its name, which means "11" in French, suggests, it opens early in November each year with the introduction of artificial snowmaking machines. It has 9 courses and allows snowboarding and snow scooting. Night skiing is open until 11 p.m., and it also offers unique services such as lift ticket discounts on the 11th of every month.

Q. What other events are held in Otaru during winter?

From November to mid-February, the "Otaru & Yoichi Yuki Monogatari" (Snow Story) is held. You can enjoy the "Blue Canal," where the Otaru Canal is romantically illuminated by approximately 10,000 blue LEDs until 10:30 PM. The canal cruises are also adorned with blue illuminations, creating a fantastical atmosphere with the blue of the lights and the blue of the sky. At Canal Plaza, a "Wine Glass Tower" handmade by citizens using 2,000 wine glasses is installed, and at Otaru Station, a "Glass Art Gallery" showcasing art pieces from local glass studios appears, warmly welcoming people arriving at Otaru Station in winter. Also, in December, "Otaru Yukihanabi" (Snow Fireworks), which synchronizes fireworks and music, is held, with large fireworks blooming in the winter night sky. Otaru's winter offers a continuous stream of enjoyable events from November to February, not just the "Snow Light Path."

December Otaru Snow Fireworks

The winter firework display in Otaru, which was held from 2000 to 2011, ceased after 2011. A group of volunteers in their 30s and 40s from Otaru started the "Otaru Snow Fireworks Project" in 2019, wanting to recreate the sight they saw as students, launching large fireworks into the winter night sky. A feature of Otaru Snow Fireworks is the romantic production that synchronizes fireworks and music, beautifully decorating the winter night sky. On the day of the event, music events are also held at Wing Bay Otaru, and food stalls are set up.
