Otaru is known for its beautiful night views, with the night view from Mt. Tengu even being counted as one of Hokkaido's three best night views. Because the sea, city, and mountains are so close, the night view is compact and shines beautifully, offering a captivating sight from any direction. Mt. Tengu can be accessed by ropeway or car, and you can see panoramic night views of Otaru from four viewpoints. Since it's very close to the city, you can enjoy a truly spectacular night view.

Although Kenashiyama Observatory is at a slightly lower elevation than Mt. Tengu, it offers a wider panoramic view of the city lights than Mt. Tengu, making it the second most famous panoramic night view spot in Otaru after Mt. Tengu.

Suitengu Shrine is located directly above Sakaimachi Street. After exploring Otaru, you can enjoy a night view overlooking ships at anchor and Otaru Port up close.

Hiraiso Park is also known for its cherry blossoms, and there is an observatory right next to the parking lot where you can see the night view of Otaru City, especially around the bay area. You can enjoy the night view from inside your car.

Asahi Observation Deck is located on a small hill about 190m above sea level, behind Otaru Station, and is a beautiful spot for panoramic night views, ranking after Mt. Tengu and Mt. Kenashi.

Temiya Park offers a beautiful panoramic night view of Otaru city even from along the roadside, making it highly recommended for a night view drive.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the "Airport" rapid train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport without transfers.

Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?

Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you add experiences like glassblowing workshops, the Music Box Museum, and dining, a 2-day, 1-night trip would be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create Otaru's iconic scenery. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has so many renowned sushi restaurants that there's even an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street). Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.

Q. Can I explore Otaru's tourist spots on foot?

The area from Otaru Station to the canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Also, Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (glassblowing, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school children and older. Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is also popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day trip destinations are accessible from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 min) is a popular choice, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruises in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
