At its peak, Otaru had over 50 sake breweries, but now only Tanaka Shuzo, which produces Otaru's local sake "Takaragawa," remains. Tanaka Shuzo, founded in 1899 (Meiji 32), has been a sake brewery for 120 years, with two stores in the city, the main store and Kikko-gura, and has been loved by the citizens for many years.

The upper part of the main store's cashier, where original wooden signboards with a vintage feel, used in the past, are lined up.

The main store is a two-story wooden building constructed in 1927 (Showa 2), designated as a "Historic Building" by Otaru City. Inside, restored to its early Showa-era appearance, old signboards and ledgers are displayed, allowing visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional sake brewery.

A product shelf lined with the revival label junmai ginjo 1.8-liter bottles of Tanaka Shuzo's signature brand 'Takaragawa' (main store exclusive).

Tanaka Shuzo has three main characteristics. First, all ingredients for sake are Hokkaido-grown rice. Second, all sake produced is junmai-shu (pure rice sake). Third, it is a "four-season brewing brewery" that brews throughout the year. While "kanzukuri" (cold brewing) in winter is common for sake brewing, Kikko-gura, another store, brews all year round.

The main store offers a unique pleasure of tasting over a dozen different brands.

Since 1998 (Heisei 10), when sake rice suitable for brewing was born in Hokkaido, Tanaka Shuzo has been using "Suisei" cultivated in Niseko, Otofuke, Furuhe, Atsuma, and other areas. At the main store, the "Junmai Ginjo Takaragawa," an exclusive sake with a recreated label that was actually used, is popular. Visitors can also enjoy sake tasting.

Otaru Tourist FAQs

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the "Airport" rapid train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport without transfers.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 2-day, 1-night trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to evening is especially recommended. Gas lamps illuminate along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water surface create a scene representative of Otaru. In winter (January to February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood rice bowls (kaisen-don), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be covered on foot?

The area from Otaru Station to the Canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the Canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can enjoy sightseeing sufficiently without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling with mild weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is a popular tranquil hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. What spots can families with children enjoy in Otaru?

Experiential glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day trip destinations are accessible from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base to explore the western Hokkaido area.
