OTARU TAP ROOM opened in February 2019 with the concept of being "a craft beer bar where you can stay". It is a facility that combines a bar specializing in craft beer with a hostel that has been fully renovated from a historic building over 100 years old.

At the bar, we offer several types of craft beer on rotation, including those from local Otaru, throughout Japan, and overseas such as the USA, each with different colors, aromas, and flavors. For food, we mainly serve Tex-Mex cuisine (Mexican-style dishes developed primarily in the southern US state of Texas) and finger foods that pair well with beer, such as burgers and tacos.

The 1-star hostel offers air-conditioned rooms (with free WiFi and a shared bathroom). It is conveniently located an 8-minute walk from Otaru Station and Otaru Sankaku Market, and a 14-minute walk from Kitaichi Glass No. 3 Building. Enjoy creating travel memories starting with a toast at this bar where locals and tourists gather.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Main Line; the Rapid Airport train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible from New Chitose Airport, taking about 75 minutes without transfers, making it convenient for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to evening is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene representative of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a fantastic atmosphere.

What gourmet foods should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood rice bowls, and grilled seafood are especially famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream.

Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing even without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a calmer visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. Are there day trip destinations from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is, of course, popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruise, approx. 1 hour). You can widely enjoy the western Hokkaido area using Otaru as a base.
