Even among the popular tourist destinations in Hokkaido, Otaru ranks among the top three tourist cities in Japan, along with Sapporo and Hakodate. The city's popularity stems from the nationally famous Otaru Canal and its convenient location, being only a 30-40 minute JR express train ride from Sapporo Station, making it easily accessible. Over 7 to 8 million people visit annually.
Despite being such a popular tourist destination, you might not have heard much about "hot springs" in Otaru. This is probably because there are so many other tourist attractions besides hot springs. Here, we will introduce some wonderful hot spring inns in Otaru, exploring what kind of hot springs Otaru actually has.

Giving the gift of Otaru.
From UNGAPLUS, delivering the "Story of Otaru"
which walked hand-in-hand with the Kitamae-bune ships,
from the "Old Otaru Warehouse" overlooking the canal,
we introduce "Places to Visit in Otaru."

How to enjoy Otaru's hot spring inns (FAQ)
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
Yes, Otaru has several accommodations where you can enjoy hot springs. Among them, Asarigawa Onsen-kyo, about 20 minutes by car from Otaru Station, is Otaru's representative hot spring area with hot spring ryokan and hotels scattered along the mountain stream. There are also hotels with natural hot springs in the city, where you can relax and recover from sightseeing fatigue. It is a popular area, with many Hokkaido residents visiting for day trips from Sapporo.
Q. What types of hot spring inns are available in Otaru?
Centered around Asarigawa Onsen-kyo, there is a wide range of types, from long-established ryokan where you can relax in Japanese-style rooms to resort hotels offering Western-style rooms. Among them, "Otaru Furukawa," located along the Otaru Canal, is a popular inn boasting a modern Japanese exterior recreating a Meiji-era merchant house and natural hot springs. You can enjoy two baths: "Ichino-yu" which resembles a storehouse made of Otaru soft stone, and "Nino-yu" with the warmth of cypress, and there are also rooms with views of the canal. The charm of Otaru is that you can choose according to your budget and desired style.
Q. Is staying at a hot spring inn in Otaru convenient for sightseeing?
Asarigawa Onsen-kyo is a bit far from Otaru city center, about 20 minutes by car, but many inns offer shuttle services. We recommend a plan where you enjoy major tourist spots like the Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street until evening, then head to a hot spring, have a leisurely breakfast the next morning, and then resume sightseeing. Also, hotels with natural hot springs in the city are more conveniently located as a base for sightseeing.
