[Notice]
To everyone planning to visit Otaru (Blue Grotto Cruise)
Due to a rockfall in Otaru's Blue Grotto on July 17, 2025, entry into the Blue Grotto has been suspended for safety reasons. For details, please inquire with each tour operator.

Photograph of the beautiful blue shining sea and sheer cliffs on the way to the entrance of the Blue Grotto

The "Blue Grotto," a beautiful blue-shining cave, is formed by a unique combination of factors such as erosion by seawater creating distinctive landforms, the direction and angle of sunlight, and the transparency of the seawater. Sunlight pouring in from the cave entrance causes the seawater to appear blue because six of the seven colors of light are absorbed in the water, leaving only blue behind.

The clear blue surface of the sea in the area near the Blue Grotto, where sheer cliffs continue, is also beautiful.

While Italy's Capri Island is globally renowned, several places in Japan are also called "Blue Grotto," and in fact, you can see a "Blue Grotto" near Otaru and Shakotan. The Blue Grotto in Otaru and Shakotan, facing the Sea of Japan, is highly praised for the beautiful contrast between its rugged rocks and the refreshing blue surface of the sea. Furthermore, Otaru's Blue Grotto is unique because its entrance is wider than other grottoes, allowing visitors to tour inside while remaining on small boats.

A shot taken from a boat just before entering the Blue Grotto. The sea surface is already blue.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

From Sapporo, the most convenient way is by JR Hakodate Main Line. The rapid "Airport" train takes approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip would be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the scene reflecting on the water is one of Otaru's iconic sights. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What must-try gourmet foods are there in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street" where many renowned sushi restaurants are gathered. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.

Q. Can I walk to the tourist spots in Otaru?

Otaru Station, the Canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, and in autumn (September-October), you can enjoy autumn leaves and seafood. Winter offers snowy scenery and the "Otaru Snow Light Path," while spring is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about a 30-40 minute drive from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there any family-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (glass blowing, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans for elementary school students and up. Also, Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day trip destinations are accessible from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 min.) is an option, of course, and popular day trip courses include Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min.) and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
