About 1,600 years ago, while the Jomon period had already ended in Honshu and Japan was transitioning from the Yayoi period to the Kofun period, Hokkaido was still in the "Post-Jomon period," a time when a hunting and gathering lifestyle persisted.

The wall carvings inside Temiya Cave are precious artworks etched by the people of that era. There are 34 confirmed motifs currently visible in the cave, many of which are repeated "Y"-shaped carvings. Cave ruins with such petroglyphs are rare in Japan, with the Fugoppedo Cave (Yoichi Town: National Historic Site) being the only other example.

Looking at neighboring countries, it is known that they are similar to rock paintings found in the Amur River basin and around Lake Baikal. In the Amur River basin, there was a custom of drawing human figures on rock faces to pray for success in hunting, suggesting that the petroglyphs in Temiya Cave may have been carved for a similar purpose. This indicates that the people of that time had交流 with Northeast Asia across the Sea of Japan.

One feels a sense of timeless wonder at the possibility that the people who lived in Otaru during the Post-Jomon period had interactions with people from Northeast Asia and Siberia across the sea.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are answers to frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How do I get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line. The rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with direct trains from New Chitose Airport taking about 75 minutes.
How much time does Otaru sightseeing take?
Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 2-day, 1-night trip will be more fulfilling.
When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and their reflections on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. During winter (January to February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
What are the must-try gourmet foods in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream.
Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.
Can Otaru's tourist spots be covered on foot?
Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). The main spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.
When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, a quiet hot spring village nestled in the mountains, is about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru and is very popular.
Are there spots in Otaru that are enjoyable for families with children?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans for children from elementary school age. Additionally, the Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 min.) is certainly an option, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min.) and Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruise, approx. 1 hour). These are popular day trip courses. Otaru serves as a great base to explore a wider area of western Hokkaido.
