The main store of Otaru Glass Palace, which has 13 branches throughout Hokkaido, mainly in Otaru City, is "Otaru Taisho Glass Palace." The Taisho era is said to be when many excellent glass works were created in Japan.

At Otaru Taisho Glass Palace, based on the concept of "conveying the beauty of Taisho to the present," they exhibit and sell a wide variety of glass products, including Japanese-style glassware that inherits the style of the time. The Otaru Taisho Glass Palace is a renovated version of the Natori Kosaburo Shoten, which was built in 1906 (Meiji 39).

Main building of Otaru Taisho Glass Palace, renovated from a historic building

The former Natori Kosaburo Shoten, built by Kosaburo Natori, a copper and ironware merchant from Yamanashi Prefecture, is a representative merchant building from the late Meiji period. Its outer walls are made of Sapporo soft stone, and the upper walls are supported by iron pillars. In 1985 (Showa 60), it was designated as a Historic Building by Otaru City.

Inside the store, you'll find a wide selection of works from their own glass studio, including handcrafted Japanese-style glassware, accessories, and miniature ornaments, as well as glass products made in Otaru City.

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct train from New Chitose Airport taking about 75 minutes.

Q. How long does it take to sightsee in Otaru?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 2-day, 1-night trip would be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and their reflection on the water is a quintessential Otaru scene. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event creates a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood rice bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street), with many renowned sushi establishments. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.

Q. Can I walk to Otaru's tourist spots?

Otaru Station to the canal to Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolls, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Otaru Snow Light Path," while spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

Within Otaru city, there are hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered about. Additionally, Asarigawa Onsen Village, about a 30-40 minute drive from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (glassblowing, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school children and older. Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is also popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy shows with seals and dolphins.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?
