The Former Otaru Warehouse, distinctive with its shachihoko (ornamental ridge-end tile in the shape of a mythical carp) and standing prominently along the Otaru Canal, is a representative building even among Otaru's many historic structures. It was built in 1890 (Meiji 23) by Nishitani and Nishide from Kagahashidate, on the south shore of Otaru Port, which had just completed its land reclamation.

Later, due to circumstances of the Nishide family, the warehouse came under the management of Kyuemon Yamamoto (second generation), who had also established a base in Otaru via kitamae-bune (northern-bound ships). The Otaru Warehouse was then expanded and remodeled into its current "ro" (ロ) shape, becoming a large-scale warehouse spanning 3,000㎡.

The shachihoko on the roof are believed to have been installed during this period. While stone warehouses were successively built along the coastline of North Hama and South Hama, the Otaru Warehouse, occupying a prime location with its immense width, stood out with an exceptional presence.

A distinctive feature of the Otaru Warehouse is not only its horizontally elongated structure facing the coast but also the presence of a courtyard surrounded by warehouses. This was related to the warehouse's function at the time, and it is said that the cargo handling area was placed in the courtyard, out of public view, to prevent information about the amount of goods stored in the warehouse from being seen.

Furthermore, to block off the entrance for horse-drawn carts, the first floor of the office building was used as a passage. The current store area of UNGAPLUS is the former passage for horse-drawn carts from the time of its founding. It is a building that symbolizes Otaru, which was the leading economic city in Northern Japan.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and dining, a 2-day, 1-night trip will make your visit more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses illuminate the canal, reflecting beautifully on the water, creating a representative Otaru scene. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event offers a magical atmosphere.

Q. What must-try gourmet foods are there in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street), where many renowned sushi restaurants are gathered. Don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling with mild weather, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and fresh seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
