Sumiyoshi Shrine, located an 8-minute walk from Minami-Otaru Station, is a shrine founded in 1868. It began in 1865 when Shigenori Kikuchi, a priest from Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine, invited Sumiyoshi Okami to be enshrined as the guardian deity of "Otarunai" and "Takashima."

In 1881, the main shrine building was constructed at its current location, making it a historic shrine with 150 years of tradition. Today, it is revered as the guardian deity of Otaru, and Sumiyoshi Shrine is always mentioned when talking about shrines in Otaru.

The enshrined deities are Sokotsutsu no O no Kami, Nakatsutsu no O no Kami, and Omotetsutsu no O no Kami, collectively known as the "Sumiyoshi Sanjin," along with Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto.

According to the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki, these gods were born from the water that flowed from Izanagi's body when he performed a purification ritual. They are revered as gods of the sea, maritime safety, waka poetry, and safe childbirth, and the shrine is deeply rooted in Otaru, a port town that prospered through maritime trade.

The Sumiyoshi Shrine Grand Festival, held annually in mid-July, is one of Otaru's three major festivals and is a lively event. Additionally, the Otaru Sumiyoshi Shrine office, which is the largest wooden building of its kind in Hokkaido, was designated as a historic building by Otaru City in 1994.
