Walk about 5 minutes from Otaru Station toward Yoichi, pass through the torii gate, and climb the hill to reach Ryugu Shrine.

Ryugu Shrine was built by Enomoto Takeaki, who was an official of the Hokkaido Development Commission. He served the Tokugawa shogunate and fought alongside Hijikata Toshizo in the Battle of Hakodate at the end of the Edo period. After the defeat, he was temporarily imprisoned as a ringleader of the Hakodate War, but his talents were recognized by the Meiji government, and he was appointed to the Hokkaido Development Commission.

While dedicated to developing Hokkaido, he envisioned providing opportunities for his struggling colleagues and transforming Hokkaido into a center for Japanese trade and diplomacy. He then focused on Otaru, which had an excellent port.

In 1869, through the sale of state-owned land, he acquired a large plot of land in the Inaho-cho area, where Ryugu Shrine is currently located, and began development. To create a spiritual home for the people who had moved to this undeveloped land from other areas, he built Ryugu Shrine in 1876.

Located on a hill overlooking the sea, the sacred platanus tree welcomes visitors. The shrine hall displays a framed calligraphy piece personally written by Enomoto Takeaki. Seven deities are enshrined here, and its former shrine rank was Gōsha. Currently, it has approximately 4,000 parishioners.

Since Taro Aso became Prime Minister after visiting Ryugu Shrine, it has become known for its blessings for good fortune and career success.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Line. The rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport without transfers.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. Adding a glassblowing experience, the Music Box Museum, and dining would make a 1-night, 2-day trip more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely try in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experiential workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). The main spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolls, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter boasts snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring area in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and older. Additionally, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour) for popular day trips. Otaru serves as a great base for exploring a wider area of western Hokkaido.
