HomeOtaru Tourism Portal | Stone and Iron STONE and IRON

"Stone and Iron STONE and IRON" is a cafe bar & hostel renovated from a stone warehouse with over 100 years of history. The first floor operates as a cafe restaurant from lunch to dinner, and the second floor has two guest rooms.

The Stone and Iron logo, made from iron, is subtly displayed on the upper left of the entrance, adding a touch of sophistication.

The "stone" of the stone warehouses that still shape Otaru's unique townscape, and the "iron" of Hokkaido's first railway that once ran through Otaru, combine to create the atmosphere of "Stone and Iron STONE and IRON." It feels distinctly Otaru, yet simultaneously exotic.

Lunchtime also offers a wide variety of high-quality dishes, similar to dinner. Pictured here is a hot sandwich with seasonal vegetables and prosciutto.

In addition to 5 counter seats offering a full view of the kitchen, there are also box seats and 6 table seats. The lunch menu includes several options such as green curry sets and croissant open sandwiches. The dinner menu offers a wide lineup, from those who want a light drink to those who want a full meal, including dishes made with local Otaru chicken.

The garden in front of Stone and Iron is also well-maintained, with a garden umbrella and iron table set for outdoor dining.

You can enjoy a cup of coffee brewed by a barista, various dishes using local Otaru chicken, and wines centered around Otaru and Yoichi.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line. The Rapid Airport train takes approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It is also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct journey from New Chitose Airport taking about 75 minutes.

Q. How much time does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create Otaru's iconic scenery. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a fantastical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely try in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Street" which is home to many famous sushi restaurants. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy scenery and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, making it a peaceful time to visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
