The Otaru City Museum Main Building is a museum located on the former site of the "Old Temiya Station," the terminal station of the former JNR Temiya Line. It is a historical spot known as the birthplace of Hokkaido's railway system.

The biggest highlight inside the museum is the exhibition of actual railway vehicles, including a real steam locomotive. Many valuable vehicles that were active in Hokkaido are preserved both indoors and outdoors, making it very popular not only with railway enthusiasts but also with families with children. In the summer, visitors can experience riding the Iron Horse steam locomotive on the premises, which is well-received as a memorable experience.

In addition to railway exhibits, there are also extensive sections on Otaru's nature and science, offering content that can be enjoyed by a wide range of generations. It takes about 1-2 hours to leisurely explore the spacious grounds. You can also enter with a common ticket for the Canal Museum, so visiting both museums will give you a deeper understanding of Otaru's history.

Although it's a bit far from the canal sightseeing area, it's definitely worth visiting as a tourist spot within walking distance.
