The Otaru City Museum Canal Museum is a museum housed in a historic stone warehouse on the banks of the Otaru Canal. It clearly introduces the history and culture of Otaru, which flourished as a commercial city in Hokkaido during the Meiji and Taisho periods, through actual materials and exhibits.

Inside the museum, you can enjoy exhibits on the history of Otaru's finance and trade, once known as "Ironai Bank Street," the life during the bustling herring fishing era, and Otaru's natural environment. The building itself is close in atmosphere to the former Temiya Line, which has national important cultural property value, making it perfect for strolling.

The Otaru City Museum Canal Museum displays a model of a Kitamaebune (northern-bound ship) and actual sails that were active in the Sea of Japan from the late Edo period to the Taisho period. This booth is right inside the entrance.

The second exhibition room displays taxidermied wild animals such as foxes and bears inhabiting Hokkaido, recreated in their natural habitats.

It is located very close to the Otaru Canal tourist attractions, so we recommend combining your visit with a canal cruise and a stroll around the area. The admission fee is reasonable, and the estimated visiting time is about an hour, making it a compact and easily accessible tourist spot for first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and their reflections on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Sakaimachi Street has a concentration of workshops and shops. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main Music Box Museum.

Q. Can I visit Otaru's tourist spots on foot?

The area from Otaru Station to the canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling due to pleasant weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful fall foliage and delicious seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring is generally less crowded for a relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there any spots in Otaru enjoyable for children?

Hands-on glass workshops (glass blowing, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school students and older. Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is also popular among families for its seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit from Otaru on a day trip?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is a popular day trip, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, about 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
