Home | Otaru Tourism Portal | Former NYK Otaru Branch
The former NYK Otaru Branch, with its lavish appearance, gives a glimpse into the prosperity of Otaru during the Meiji period. Built in October 1906 by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), which remains a core company of the Mitsubishi Group, it is known as one of Japan's three major shipping companies and is highly recognized internationally, still representing Japanese shipping today.

At that time, Otaru was expanding its commercial port functions for Europe as a base for the national Hokkaido development project. Simultaneously, financial institutions and trading companies actively established themselves, leading to Otaru being called "the Wall Street of the North," and many buildings showcasing the pinnacle of architectural skill were constructed by top architects.

This building symbolizes the heyday of Otaru's development. It is a two-story stone building in the European Renaissance style. The interior's VIP room is a lavish and luxurious space, featuring a plaster ceiling, chandeliers, deep crimson curtains, and a striking large floral-patterned carpet on a parquet floor. The walls are adorned with "Kinkarakawashi" (gold leather paper) with a chrysanthemum motif, which was said to have been extremely difficult to restore.

Kinkarakawashi is a traditional Japanese craft based on "Kinkarakawa," a leather craft invented in Europe during the Renaissance. It attracted significant attention in Europe when exhibited at the Vienna World's Fair and was even exported.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We answer common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the Rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.
Q. How long does it take to tour Otaru?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass workshop experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create Otaru's iconic scenery. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, don't miss LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream as local sweets.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.
Q. Can I walk to Otaru's tourist spots?
Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.
Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
Q. What tourist destinations can I visit from Otaru on a day trip?
Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru can be used as a base to extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
