Ginrinsou, a hot spring ryotei located at Cape Hirasoiso in Sakuracho, Otaru City, was originally the residence of Yasunojo Inomata, a fishing net owner who made a fortune from herring fishing. It was built in Yoichi Town in 1900 as a herring mansion. It took about three years to build and was constructed with the utmost luxury.

In 1938, it was relocated to its current location as part of the urban planning for East Otaru. The following year, in 1939, it opened as a ryokan and was named "Ginrinsou" by Hidehiko Ishiguro, who was then the Governor of Hokkaido.

Currently, it is selected as one of the 100 Cultural Properties of Hokkaido and is "the only herring mansion in Japan where you can stay." The main building, which is a herring mansion, is designated as a historic building by Otaru City as "Former Inomata Residence."

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line, taking approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station on the Rapid Airport train. It is also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct journey of about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal vicinity and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to one day is a good estimate. If you add glass workshop experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water surface create Otaru's iconic scenery. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely try in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many famous sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street). Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's sightseeing spots be visited on foot?

Otaru Station to the canal and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolls due to its mild climate, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, located about a 30-40 minute drive from Otaru, is a popular tranquil hot spring area nestled in the mountains.

Q. What spots are enjoyable for families with children in Otaru?

Interactive glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that children from elementary school age can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is a given, but Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Grotto cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip options. Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
