"Otaru Snow Light Path" began in 1999 as a measure to counteract the decrease in tourists during the winter months. Held every February, it has now become one of Otaru's signature events, attracting approximately 500,000 visitors over about 10 days.

At the Yuki Akari no Michi

The event was named after the poetry collection "Yukiakari no Michi" (Snow Light Path) by Otaru-born poet Sei Ito. The warm glow of candles envelops Otaru's unique old townscape, which boasts many historic buildings such as banks and warehouses built during the Meiji and Taisho periods.

With snow candles and floating candle lights on the canal, the main venue of Otaru Canal is picturesque from any angle

During the event, over 100,000 candles are used, lit with the help of volunteers from Japan and abroad who value human warmth. Candles illuminate the entire city of Otaru, with the Otaru Canal and the former Japan National Railways Temiya Line site serving as the main venues.

Volunteers create snow candle sculptures everywhere, enveloping the entire city in a magical atmosphere

At the Canal venue, "floating ball candles" with candles lit inside processed glass balls are floated on the water, and "snow candles" with candles lit inside snow sculptures are created along the canal's promenade. At the Temiya Line venue, a "snow tunnel" is created, along with various other installations, to produce an enchanting "Snow Light Path."

Since it's a city-wide event, you can enjoy fantastic scenery wherever you walk in Otaru.

Candle lights are scattered along the streams flowing through the city, creating an otherworldly atmosphere at Otaru Snow Light Path

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

From Sapporo, the most convenient option is the JR Hakodate Line; the Rapid "Airport" train takes approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses and their reflections on the water create a quintessential Otaru scene. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

What gourmet food must I try in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experiential glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main Otaru Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be covered on foot?

Otaru Station, the Canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season to visit Otaru?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter features snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring is relatively less crowded, allowing for a relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo hot spring village, located about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru where children can enjoy themselves?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day trip destinations are there from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is, of course, a popular day trip, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruise, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a base to extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
