Home | Otaru Tourism Portal | Otaru Fishing Ports
Otaru has three fishing ports: Shukutsu Fishing Port, Shioya Fishing Port, and Oshoro Fishing Port. All of these are Type 1 fishing ports (meaning their usage is primarily for local fishing). The fishing port in Takashima is called Takashima Fishing Port District and is treated as part of Otaru Port, a "major port" under the Port and Harbor Act.

Shukutsu Fishing Port, Shioya Fishing Port, Oshoro Fishing Port, and Takashima Fishing Port District all developed as fishing grounds from the late Edo period by people who migrated north in search of herring. Even today, many industrial heritage sites from the herring fishing era remain, giving the area a very atmospheric feel. What truly makes Otaru's fishing ports charming is the beautiful sea. They are part of the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, famous for its Shakotan Blue nickname.

Otaru Tourist Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How do I get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Line. The "Airport" rapid train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.
Q. How much time should I allocate for Otaru sightseeing?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, an overnight stay of 1 night and 2 days will make your trip even more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflection on the water is a representative sight of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.
Q. Can I explore Otaru's tourist spots on foot?
Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing even without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) allows you to enjoy autumn foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy scenery and the "Snow Light Path," while spring is less crowded with tourists, offering a calm experience.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.
Q. Are there spots in Otaru where children can also enjoy themselves?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is a given, but Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour) are also popular day trip courses. You can widely enjoy the western Hokkaido area with Otaru as your base.
