Home | Otaru Tourism Portal | Otaru Fishing Port
Otaru has three fishing ports: Shukutsu Fishing Port, Shioya Fishing Port, and Oshoro Fishing Port, all of which are Type 1 fishing ports (used primarily for local fishing). The fishing port in Takashima is called the Takashima Fishing Port District and is treated as part of Otaru Port, which is an important port under the Port and Harbor Law.
Shukutsu Fishing Port, Shioya Fishing Port, Oshoro Fishing Port, and Takashima Fishing Port District all developed as fishing grounds in the late Edo period, thanks to people who traveled north in search of herring. Even today, many of the industrial heritage sites from those days as herring fishing grounds remain, making these areas very picturesque. The greatest attraction of Otaru's fishing port is the beauty of its ocean. It is part of the ocean of the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Coast Quasi-National Park, famous for its Shakotan Blue color.
