Approximately 40 minutes by car from central Sapporo and 30 minutes from Otaru city. After passing through the Asarigawa Onsen town just before Otaru, the "Asari Sky Loop" suddenly appears. This magnificent collaboration between the giant loop bridge and the Asari Dam has received the Otaru City Urban Landscape Award and is popular among architecture enthusiasts.

Asari Dam is located above the Asari Sky Loop. The height of Asari Dam is 73.9m. You can enjoy Otarunai Lake, which is the dam lake, and on a clear day, you can enjoy the beautiful curve of the Asari Sky Loop from the crest and the sea viewed from between the mountains. In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn colorful, making it a popular spot for autumn foliage, and the blue sky and autumn leaves reflected on the lake surface are very beautiful.

From the observation deck, you can see the mountains beyond the water, and the clear ridge lines stretching into the distance create a unique landscape. On the shores of Lake Otarunai, there is the Asari Dam Memorial Museum, which exhibits materials related to the dam, and a park. Near the dam, there is also a sports ground with tennis courts. The memorial museum displays models of the dam, panels introducing the construction of Asari Dam, and panels introducing water facilities in Otaru City.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line, taking approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station on the rapid "Airport" train. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct ride from New Chitose Airport taking about 75 minutes.

Q. How long does it take to sightsee in Otaru?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is particularly recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the scene reflected on the water is a representative view of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, kaisendon (seafood rice bowl), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has so many excellent sushi restaurants that there's even an area called "Sushi Street." Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can I tour Otaru's tourist spots on foot?

Otaru Station to the Canal and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the Canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season has different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather and is ideal for strolls, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter boasts snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring is relatively quiet with fewer tourists.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru that children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school children can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit from Otaru on a day trip?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes), Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes), and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour) are popular day-trip courses. You can use Otaru as a base to enjoy a wide area of western Hokkaido.
