Mount Akaiwa, located in the northwestern part of Otaru City, appears as a hill when viewed from the city side. However, if you take a sightseeing boat around the Omoi Coast and see it from the sea, you'll be overwhelmed by the rugged sight of numerous reddish-brown rock formations and peaks rising directly from sea level.

The Otaru sea, shining with Shakotan blue, can be seen through an arched rock formation

It is also one of Hokkaido's premier rock climbing fields, attracting many climbers. Mount Akaiwa consists of two peaks: Mount Akaiwa (371.1 meters) and Mount Shimo-Akaiwa (approximately 278 meters). Generally, Mount Akaiwa is called "Nishi-Akaiwa" (West Akaiwa), and Mount Shimo-Akaiwa is called "Higashi-Akaiwa" (East Akaiwa).

Along the ridge of Mount Akaiwa is the "Otaru Coast Nature Trail" hiking course. Most of the seaside area beyond this ridge is a rocky mountain range, which serves as a climbing area. The "Otaru Coast Nature Trail" is an approximately 5.5-kilometer trail that passes near the summit of Mount Akaiwa and the summit of Mount Shimo-Akaiwa. This undulating nature trail is located within a national park, offering beautiful coastal scenery below and various seasonal plants.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

From Sapporo, the most convenient way is the JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport with no transfers.

Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glass workshop experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, an overnight stay of 1 night and 2 days would make for a more fulfilling trip.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and the reflection on the water is a representative scene of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely try in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Also, the Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is a popular quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. Are there day-trip tourist destinations from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Grotto cruise in summer, about 1 hour). Otaru serves as a base to widely enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
