The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line, taking approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station on the rapid "Airport" train. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes with no transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses and their reflection on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Sushi, kaisendon (seafood bowls), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and delicious seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

There are hotels and ryokan (Japanese inns) with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo (hot spring village), about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil mountain hot spring destination.

Interactive glass workshops (e.g., glass blowing, sandblasting) offer programs that elementary school children can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Sapporo (approx. 32 min) is certainly an option, and other popular day trip courses include Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru makes a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
