On the way from Sapporo Station to Otaru via the JR Hakodate Main Line, the train runs along the coastline overlooking the Sea of Japan after passing Zenibako Station. After about 3 km, you will reach the Hariasu area, and a large, impressive rock will appear directly to the right of the tracks. This is "Ebisujima Island," a landmark in this area.

Incidentally, Ebisujima Island is said to have been named after "Ebisuya," the trade name of the Okada family, contractors for the Otarunai Place during the Edo period. Ebisujima Island is a small island located off the coast of the Hariasu area in Otaru and is counted as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Otaru (Eight Scenic Views of the Hariasu area).

Known for the arrival of White-bellied Green Pigeons, access to the immediate vicinity of Ebisujima Island is prohibited due to it being a wildlife protection area. The White-bellied Green Pigeon, also designated as Otaru City's bird, belongs to the pigeon family and is an endemic Japanese bird with beautiful, shimmering green feathers. It is a rare summer bird that migrates from Honshu and further south in early May and can be seen until around October. It is said that there are only a few habitats in Hokkaido.

The habitat on the Hariasu coast is in the forest near the JR Hakodate Main Line, where hundreds of birds form flocks and can be seen descending to the rocky areas near Ebisujima Island in the morning and evening to drink seawater. It is said that a bird researcher residing in Otaru City discovered the habit of White-bellied Green Pigeons drinking seawater.
