Home | Otaru Tourism Portal | Hariasu Ebisujima Island
On the way from Sapporo Station to Otaru via the JR Hakodate Main Line, the train runs along the coastline overlooking the Sea of Japan after passing Zenibako Station. After about 3 km, you will reach the Hariasu area, and a large, impressive rock will appear directly to the right of the tracks. This is "Ebisujima Island," a landmark in this area.

Incidentally, Ebisujima Island is said to have been named after "Ebisuya," the trade name of the Okada family, contractors for the Otarunai Place during the Edo period. Ebisujima Island is a small island located off the coast of the Hariasu area in Otaru and is counted as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Otaru (Eight Scenic Views of the Hariasu area).

Known for the arrival of White-bellied Green Pigeons, access to the immediate vicinity of Ebisujima Island is prohibited due to it being a wildlife protection area. The White-bellied Green Pigeon, also designated as Otaru City's bird, belongs to the pigeon family and is an endemic Japanese bird with beautiful, shimmering green feathers. It is a rare summer bird that migrates from Honshu and further south in early May and can be seen until around October. It is said that there are only a few habitats in Hokkaido.

The habitat on the Hariasu coast is in the forest near the JR Hakodate Main Line, where hundreds of birds form flocks and can be seen descending to the rocky areas near Ebisujima Island in the morning and evening to drink seawater. It is said that a bird researcher residing in Otaru City discovered the habit of White-bellied Green Pigeons drinking seawater.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How do I get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line, taking approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station on the rapid "Airport" train. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport without transfers.
Q. How long does it take to sightsee in Otaru?
Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you include glass art experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflection on the water is a representative scene of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely try in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.
Q. Can I walk around Otaru's tourist spots?
Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing even without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather and is perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo hot spring village, located about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.
Q. Are there spots in Otaru that children can enjoy?
Hands-on glass workshops (blown glass, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school children and older. Also, Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruise, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a base for enjoying a wider area of western Hokkaido.
