Home | Otaru Tourism Portal | Northernmost tip of North Canal
The North Canal, where the vestiges of ancient times remain, is home to numerous historic buildings and stone warehouses built during the Meiji period, such as the former Otaru Branch of Nippon Yusen and the former Shibusawa Warehouse. Many remnants of old Otaru also remain, including gas lamps and the Hokkai Seikan Otaru Factory.

Unlike the bustling Otaru Canal area, which has become heavily commercialized, this is a quiet area that retains the charm of an old port town. At the northern end of the North Canal is the Canal Park, popular as a recreation spot for Otaru citizens, with cobblestone paths and a fountain in the center. The Western-style building visible behind the fountain is the former Otaru Branch of Nippon Yusen.

This two-story stone building, completed in 1906 (Meiji 39) in the Neo-European Revival style, is designated as a national important cultural property. Near the park, there's also the Uroko Yū Asaichi (morning market) bustling with shoppers, as well as many delicious cafes and restaurants renovated from stone warehouses like the former Shibusawa Warehouse, making it a hidden gem for exploring Otaru.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are answers to common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is the JR Hakodate Main Line; the "Airport" rapid train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible from New Chitose Airport, taking about 75 minutes without transfers, making it convenient for tourists from outside Hokkaido.
Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal vicinity and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass workshop experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?
Evening to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses illuminate the canal, creating a reflection on the water that is a representative scene of Otaru. During winter (January to February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?
Sushi, kaisendon (seafood bowls), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street), with many renowned sushi establishments. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops, such as glass specialty stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building, just by walking down the street.
Can I walk to Otaru's tourist spots?
Otaru Station to the Canal and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can sightsee sufficiently without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling due to mild weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.
Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans for children from elementary school age. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
What day trip destinations are accessible from Otaru?
Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, about 1 hour). These are popular day-trip destinations. You can enjoy a wide area of western Hokkaido based in Otaru.
