Home | Otaru Tourism Portal | Northernmost Point of the North Canal
The North Canal, where traces of the past remain intact, is home to many historical buildings and stone warehouses built during the Meiji period, such as the former Nippon Yusen Otaru Branch and the former Shibusawa Warehouse. Many things remain that convey the atmosphere of Otaru in the past, such as gas lamps and the Hokkai Can Otaru Factory.
Unlike the bustling Otaru Canal area, which is becoming increasingly touristy, this is a quiet area that still retains the atmosphere of an old port town. At the northern end of the North Canal is Canal Park, a popular place of relaxation for Otaru residents. The park is paved with cobblestones and has a fountain in the center. The Western-style building visible behind the fountain is the former Nippon Yusen Otaru branch.
This building is a two-story stone structure in the early modern European Revival style that was completed in 1906 (Meiji 39) and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Near the park, there is also the bustling Rinyu Morning Market, and many delicious cafes and restaurants in renovated stone warehouses, such as the former Shibusawa Warehouse, making it a hidden gem for exploring during your trip to Otaru.
