Canal Plaza (Otaru City Tourism & Local Products Plaza) was established in 1990 (Heisei 2) using the southern part of the former Otaru Warehouse. Its purpose is to promote local products, provide tourist information, foster industrial development in the city, and serve as a place for citizen interaction.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Line. The rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?

Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as around the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip would be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the sight of them reflecting on the water is one of Otaru's most iconic views. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event creates a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street" because so many famous sushi restaurants are gathered there. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be visited on foot?

Otaru Station to the Canal to Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring has relatively fewer tourists, making for a calm visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo hot spring village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. What spots can children enjoy in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) have plans that children from elementary school age can participate in. Also, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, but Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery - about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Grotto cruise - about 1 hour) are popular day-trip courses. Otaru can be used as a base to widely enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
