"THE JAZZ HIDEWAY CAFE Free-Lance" is a renowned jazz cafe, famous as a hub for jazz in Otaru. It's located about a 7-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, along the former Temiya Line walking path.

The shop is a renovated stone warehouse from the former Oba Shoten, built in 1908 (Meiji 41). Whether viewed from the outside or inside, it's a wonderful place that perfectly matches Otaru's nostalgic town atmosphere. As you open the door and step inside, the unique and distinctive world of Free-Lance unfolds before you.

Jazz music, of course, plays in the background, and both the first and second floors are highly recommended. Live performances by artists from Hokkaido and beyond, as well as jam sessions by the Otaru Jazz Club, are held here, and photo exhibitions are also reportedly held on the 2nd floor. If you're a jazz lover, this is definitely a place you'll want to visit every time you come to Otaru.

You can also enjoy coffee, pasta, hot sandwiches, and sweets, with the special "Triple Coffee" being particularly recommended. Its rich, deep, and strong flavor is said to be especially popular among black coffee enthusiasts. Alcohol is also available, making it a popular jazz cafe at night as well.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

From Sapporo, the most convenient way is by JR Hakodate Main Line, taking about 32 minutes on the rapid "Airport" train from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct journey of about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How much time do I need for Otaru sightseeing?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal vicinity and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to one day is a good estimate. Adding a glassblowing experience, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip would be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water are a quintessential Otaru sight. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event creates a magical atmosphere.

Q. What Otaru gourmet foods should I definitely try?

Sushi, seafood rice bowls (kaisen-don), and grilled seafood (kaisen-yaki) are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Sakaimachi Street has a concentration of experiential workshops and shops. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.

Q. Can I explore Otaru's tourist spots on foot?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling with mild weather, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and fresh seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring is relatively quiet with fewer tourists.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there any family-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and older. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day trips can I take from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes), Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes), and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip options. You can use Otaru as a base to extensively explore the western Hokkaido area.
