About a 5-minute walk straight uphill from Ryugu Bridge over the Otaru Canal towards Otaru Station is "Nakayoshi Shokudo Pepechanchi." It's about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station. During lunchtime, it operates as a restaurant serving creative lunches, and in the evening, it transforms into a popular izakaya where local regulars gather.

The lunch sets are hearty. Today's set meal is fried chicken.

The restaurant originally operated in Sapporo under the same name, but a few years ago, it relocated and reopened in Otaru when the owners moved there. It's a family-run business, and the name "Pepechanchi" comes from their beloved dog, Pepe-chan. The cute, large white dog illustration on the wall next to the entrance is a landmark of the restaurant, and it's likely Pepe-chan herself.

The interior is a cozy space with the warmth of wood, featuring 4 tables and about 10 counter seats. The lunch menu boasts over 80 creative dishes, including the most popular daily "Nakayoshi Bento," rice dishes like "Omuritan" (omelet rice topped with creamy egg), noodle dishes like "Pepe-style Udon" (pork and egg intertwined with udon), as well as kids' meals and desserts. Set drinks are available for 150 yen. Everything looks so delicious, it's hard to decide what to choose.

The evening menu is also extensive, featuring classics like zangi (fried chicken) and French fries, as well as creative dishes that pair well with alcohol, rice dishes, noodles, fried foods, vegetables, and snacks. They offer a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, including beer, shochu, plum wine, whiskey, cocktails, and Hokkaido's local sake. With its friendly and homey atmosphere, and playful touches throughout the interior, it's a highly recommended spot where you're sure to relax as if you were at home.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing usually take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass art experiences, the music box museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the scene reflecting on the water is a representative view of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What Otaru gourmet food should I definitely try?

Sushi, seafood bowls (kaisendon), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street) where many famous sushi restaurants gather. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Otaru Station to the Canal to Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks; autumn (September-October) offers autumn leaves and seafood. Winter boasts snowy scenery and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about a 30-40 minute drive from Otaru, is a popular quiet hot spring village in the mountains.

Q. What spots in Otaru can families with children enjoy?

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is a popular choice, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
