Marutani Seipan moved to near Asarigawa Onsen in Otaru in April 2020. Popular staples include crispy croissants made with Hokkaido wheat and a delicate scent of fermented butter, and melon bread with a crispy crust and moist, fine-textured interior that resembles a brioche-like cookie.A front shot of the iron Marutani Seipan logo sign on the left side of the store entrance

In addition, it's a popular bakery with many delicious items, including hard-crust breads with dried fruits, baguettes, and pain de campagne. After starting operations under the name "Myoken Marche" in Myoken Market (Myoken Market closed in March 2020), it relocated to Midori-cho in Otaru City in 2016.

The Asari store, which is its second relocation, was newly built and has parking space for four cars. The new store's exterior and interior feature a simple design that eliminates all unnecessary elements, so much so that without the "Marutani Seipan" sign next to the entrance, you might not even realize it's a bakery at first glance.

While photography inside the store is not allowed, it's a very stylish building, and it's a bakery that makes visiting "Marutani Seipan" feel like an exciting event.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

From Sapporo, the most convenient way is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible from New Chitose Airport, taking about 75 minutes without transfers, making it convenient for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing usually take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 2-day, 1-night trip would be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflection on the water is a representative scene of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely try in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area known as "Sushi Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Otaru Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter boasts snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring is less crowded, allowing for a relaxed visit.

Q. Are there any hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Experience-based glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school students and up. Additionally, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 min.) is certainly popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min.) and Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruise, approx. 1 hour). These are popular day trip options. You can widely enjoy the western Hokkaido area with Otaru as your base.
